STAR Institute Announces New Social Success Video Courses for Parents and Professionals
(PRWEB) June 19, 2018 -- STAR Institute for Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) has released two new video courses, focused around helping children with SPD develop better social skills. The courses offer unique content to help parents, caregivers and professionals support children with SPD and give them the skills they need for social success. Both the parent course, titled A Parent’s Guide: Finding Social Success Using A SECRET and the professional course, A Professional’s Guide: Developing Groups for Social Success Using A SECRET, contain a video lesson led by STAR Institute therapists.
These courses were developed because one of the primary challenges that STAR Institute families report is that their child doesn’t know how to socialize or engage. Studies show that some of the most important skills for later success are based on social capacities. Elements like cooperation, self-control, confidence, independence, and communication are key to social and life success. STAR Institute staff will guide parents and professionals through their courses and help them problem solve social challenges by using the framework of “A SECRET” by Dr. Lucy Jane Miller and Doreit Bialer.
Both courses are led by two STAR Institute therapists, both of whom are industry-leaders in the field of SPD. Carrie Dishlip, CCC-SLP is a speech language pathologist with experience developing and running social skills programs. Dishlip has also led professional and parent workshops on social skills and AAC and has run the Hanen It Takes Two to Talk® and PROMPT PARENT/CAREGIVER® workshops. Vincentia Ferrari, MOT, OTR/L works as an occupational therapist with extensive training in SPD treatment including the Level 1 Mentorship program with STAR Institute. Ferrari has also received continued education training in Integrated Listening Systems (iLs), treating Central Auditory Processing Disorders, SOS Approach to Feeding, NDT approach, Handwriting Without Tears, and is a licensed Level 2 Therapist in Hippotherapy.
“We’re excited to add this new course to our growing library of resources on SPD University for both parents and professionals,” said Mim Ochsenbein, Director of Education at STAR Institute. “Developing social skills is something many children with SPD struggle with, and we’re confident these videos will give parents and professionals skills they need to better support the children in their lives.”
The Social Success course for parents is available on SPD University for $15 as well as the professional course for $50. The professional course is eligible for Continuing Education Credit (CEUs) from the AOTA.
