Law School Scholarship Encourages Women to Pursue IP

ChIPs, a nonprofit organization that advances and connects women in technology, law and policy, announced today the launch of the Rachel Krevans Scholarship for women law students interested in a career in intellectual property.

ChIPs established the scholarship in 2018 to honor the memory of Rachel Krevans, a renowned intellectual property litigator at Morrison & Foerster LLP, and to promote diversity in IP, a practice area central to ChIPs’ roots.

Applications are now open. An award of $5,000 will be given annually to one student entering her third or subsequent year of law school to be used toward tuition.

Krevans’ career spanned nearly three decades of groundbreaking trials and high-profile patent disputes. She was repeatedly recognized as a top IP litigator and a leader in tech law. She was also passionately dedicated to the advancement, promotion and retention of women in tech and IP. Krevans served on the ChIPs Law Firm Advisory Board and was inducted into the ChIPs Hall of Fame in 2014. She died in 2017 at age 60 after a battle with cancer.

“Rachel was a brilliant litigator and a champion of women,” said ChIPs Co-founder and Board Chair Noreen Krall, Apple’s Vice President and Chief Litigation Counsel who worked closely with Krevans. “We hope future generations of women will be inspired by her legacy as they embark upon their careers.”

The scholarship is funded by a generous donation made by Morrison & Foerster.

“Rachel was an inspiration to us all. She was a wonderful colleague, a world-class litigator, and a pioneer in the legal industry,” said Morrison & Foerster Chair Larren Nashelsky who was Krevans’ long-time friend. “We are proud that Rachel made her home at Morrison & Foerster, and we are delighted to partner with ChIPs to continue her legacy of passionate client service and the advancement of women in IP.”
