Friedman Dental Group Shares Oral Health Tips for Summer Activities

“With so many other safety tips to keep in mind throughout summer, oral health may not be top of mind for most people,” said Dr. Katia Friedman, DDS and co-owner of Friedman Dental Group. “Now that the weather is nice enough to use the pool or play sports outdoors, however, it’s important to plan ahead to avoid any potential oral injuries.”
Oral Health Tips for Summer
1. Remember to wear a well-fitting mouthguard and/or a helmet with a facemask for any summer sports you or your children may be participating in over summer. It’s easy to fall while playing any number of sports and chip, break or even knock out a tooth.
2. Make sure you and your children follow the “pool rules” and avoid running or rough horseplay in the pool. Many oral injuries treated by dentists over the summer are a result of playing in or near the pool, according to the Academy of General Dentistry.
3. Pack an emergency dental kit for any summer trips. The items you should have available in it include: gauze, ibuprofen, and a small container with a lid for any accidental tooth loss.
4. If you or your child do lose a full tooth, find the tooth and submerge it in water or milk. Avoid touching the root of the tooth, as this can potentially cause infection.
5. Most importantly, keep your dentist’s contact information on hand throughout summer. Should you or your child have an oral injury, it’s critical to get to your dentist as soon as possible so they can check and repair the damage. Call for an emergency appointment, and the staff can assist you.
