Program Combats Students’ Summer Learning Loss with Engaging College Experience
SAN DIEGO (PRWEB) June 19, 2018 -- SuperCamp, a unique learning and life skills program, is providing teens and pre-teens with summer stimulation that helps motivate and inspire them for success when they return to school in the fall.
The program, now in its 37th year, has proven effective at offsetting summer learning loss in students by teaching them new skills that are applicable in all subject areas at school. Summer learning loss, also known as summer setback or summer slide, has been documented and validated in numerous studies over several decades.
The learning skills taught at SuperCamp include techniques for more effective writing, reading, test-taking, studying, creative thinking, and goal-setting. Students also learn a three-step Get Ready, Get Set and Go process that they apply to all academic work for better results in school. Evidence of SuperCamp’s impact on student performance is seen in surveys with graduates of the program that report increased grades (73% of respondents) and confidence (81% of respondents).
Character development is included in the training that students receive at SuperCamp. Students learn about eight character principles that collectively can help to inspire and direct their academic and personal lives. Among the principles taught are Integrity, Failure Leads to Success, Commitment and Ownership.
SuperCamp co-founder and president, Bobbi DePorter, says, “While summer learning loss is a real thing, parents don’t necessarily want to send their kids to summer school. That’s why SuperCamp is such a perfect antidote because it’s fun, engaging and inspiring. We like to say that students get a summer learning gain by attending SuperCamp.”
Adinah Torres, a parent of a student who attended SuperCamp, said, “Stephen had an incredible experience at SuperCamp. He definitely gained a different perspective on school and on how he will tackle the challenges in his upcoming school year.”
