CMT Association Announces New “Stackable Credential” with the CFA Institute
NEW YORK (PRWEB) June 19, 2018 -- The Chartered Market Technicians (CMT) Association, the global leader for advancing the discipline of technical analysis, announced a new initiative to help fundamental investors fast-track their pursuit of the CMT charter which provides recognition of professional competency in the field of technical analysis. Effective immediately, all CFA charterholders have been granted a waiver from the CMT Level I exam – the first of three rigorous exams required to attain the Chartered Market Technician (CMT) ® designation.
This new initiative allows CFA charterholders to immediately begin preparing for Level II of the CMT exam. Though they are exempt from the Level I exam, all candidates are responsible for the knowledge and all learning objectives in the Level I curriculum. Upon successfully passing the Level III exam and joining the CMT Association as a Professional Member, the candidate will earn the globally recognized CMT Charter, a mark of distinction for active asset managers navigating unpredictable markets on behalf of their clients and firms. “By fusing fundamental and technical tools, portfolio managers will have a more complete view of the value of securities in their portfolio and the behavior of market participants that drives price,” noted Stanley Dash, CMT Director of the CMT Program.
The exemption was carefully reviewed over the course of many months by Association staff, the Curriculum and Test Committee, and the Board of directors. The CMT Association is implementing this initiative after a multi-year effort to advance the CMT curriculum - beginning with an industry practice analysis in 2014. Feedback from the practice analysis led the Association to broaden the Level I curriculum to include base level coverage of topics that are universal prerequisites for entering the financial industry.
With the curriculum changes, the foundational knowledge within the Level I exam overlaps significantly with similar topics covered by the CFA Program. The CFA Level I exam includes a unit on technical analysis and CFA Charterholders are pledged to the CFA Code of Ethics, which the CMT Association shares. As a result, CFA charterholders have already demonstrated mastery of many of the key learnings covered in the Level I CMT exam.
“The pace of innovation in the financial markets requires portfolio managers to be well-rounded in the perspectives they bring to investing,” noted Alvin Kressler, CEO of CMT Association. “Our waiver from the level I CMT exam for CFA charterholders recognizes their previous work and understanding of capital markets, allowing them to focus their studies on more advanced applications of technical concepts and quantitative methodologies in the portfolio context.”
CMT charterholders and hiring managers from all areas of the investment industry have reported that the advanced learnings at Level II and III of the CMT exam are extremely valuable for building the toolkit required career advancement opportunities and an enhanced investment process.
The CMT Program is rigorous, but by bypassing the Level I exam, CFA charterholders may now earn the full CMT designation in just 12 months. “The CMT Program exam exemption for CFA charterholders acknowledges the value of stackable credentials as a tool for lifelong learning, above and beyond the generalist breadth of coverage in the CFA Program,” says Stephen Horan, Ph.D., CFA, CIPM Managing Director of Credentialing at CFA Institute. “This provides CFA charterholders a structured learning path as part of an integrated competency framework to customize continuing professional development with these valuable specialty credentials to efficiently advance their careers.”
The Level II and III exams are both offered twice each year. Successful CMT candidates deepen their understanding of risk management, quantitative systems design, and applied behavioral finance, which can increase their professional value to employers and clients alike. Interested candidates are now able to register for the November/December Level II exam administration. Go to https://cmtassociation.org/cfawaiver/ for more information.
The elite ranks of CMT/CFA dual charterholders are setting an example to the industry for fusing technical and fundamental analysis. The CMT Association’s Curriculum and Test Development Committee is now comprised entirely of dual CMT/CFA charterholders which speaks to the complementary nature of the two disciplines.
