Plant Delights Nursery at Juniper Level Botanic Garden is Excited to Announce its First Flowering of the Rare Titan Arum, Amorphophallus titanum, Named Peter Grande
RALEIGH, N.C. (PRWEB) July 04, 2018 -- Plant Delights Nursery at Juniper Level Botanic Garden, located at 9241 Sauls Rd., Raleigh, NC 27603, is excited to announce its first flowering of the rare Titan Arum...Amorphophallus titanum, named Peter Grande.
Amorphophallus titanum has a larger than life reputation because of its enormous floral show…the largest unbranched inflorescence in the plant kingdom, ranging from 3' to 12’ tall. The inflorescence, which is often called a "flower", remains open for only 24-48 hours.
Titan Arum is native to the understory of the Sumatran rainforest, where it is considered a highly vulnerable species, Amorphophallus titanum has been in cultivation since at least 1889 when a specimen flowered at the UK's Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Since then, just over 570 Titan Arums have flowered in cultivation worldwide, with just over 350 of those being in the United States.
We’re expecting Peter Grande's flowering to start this Friday, July 6, 2018 for the start of our Summer Open Nursery and Garden Days, but with the caveat that nature really doesn’t care about our plans, so the viewing dates could change. Follow us @PlantDelightsNursery on Facebook for updates on flowering. The nursery will be open extended evening hours until 8pm to allow ample opportunity to witness this rare horticultural occurrence. If you’d like to experience the fragrance for which the genus is known, the smell should peak the first afternoon of opening.
We've added a special Titan page to our website, https://www.plantdelights.com/pages/amorphophallus-titanum-flowering. that includes a live feed Peter video cam, fascinating new Titanum trivia, and an amazing sortable spreadsheet of every known Amorphophallus titanum to flower in cultivation.
