Felix & Paul Studios Premieres Space Explorers: Taking Flight Virtual Reality Experience on the Oculus Store

Felix & Paul Studios, the EMMY® award-winning creator of immersive entertainment experiences, today premiered Episode Two of their groundbreaking virtual reality series, Space Explorers, on the Oculus Store. This latest episode in the series was produced in conjunction with Facebook’s Oculus with participation from NASA, the Russian space agency, Roscosmos, and leading private space transportation companies. The first episode of this made-for-VR series, Space Explorers: A New Dawn, premiered at the 2018 Sundance New Frontier exhibition to wide critical acclaim. Academy Award-winning actress Brie Larson provided narration for both Episodes 1 and 2 of Space Explorers.
Space Explorers: Taking Flight shines a light on how collaboration is vital to the present and future of space exploration. From traditional cooperation between international space programs to new partnerships between agencies like NASA and private corporations, Space Explorers: Taking Flight provides a unique perspective on the wide reaching ambition of mankind to explore our universe.

As the second episode in a multi-part series, Space Explorers: Taking Flight explores some of the new technological innovations and initiatives being developed around the world and also highlights how astronauts from different countries work together on projects like the International Space Station (ISS). The viewer is treated to several thrilling rocket launches, including one in Star City, Russia to witness the launch of a Soyuz rocket that transports Russian cosmonaut Alexander Misurkin to the ISS.
Space Explorers: Taking Flight was directed by pioneering VR creative directors Félix Lajeunesse and Paul Raphaël. The 21-minute virtual reality experience was captured and produced using Felix & Paul Studios’ full spectrum VR platform, including the studio’s proprietary, state-of the art cameras and pre- and post-production software suite. To capture the sheer intensity of the moment, and to provide viewers with the best vantage point for multiple rocket launches, the studio created a unique system to separate their physical proprietary VR cameras from the camera’s data recording and battery systems. This allowed the physical cameras to be “sacrificed” to the heat and fire of a rocket launch while preserving the data to produce the highly intense and unique 3D 360-degree immersive virtual reality scenes in Space Explorers: Taking Flight. Headspace Studio, the leader in 3D positional audio processing, provided audio capture and end-to-end sound processing for the Space Explorers: Taking Flight experience.
