Charter School Capital will donate $1,000 to three charter schools selected by Dewey Award recipients
PORTLAND, Ore., Nov. 22, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Charter School Capital, standing in support of charter schools nationwide through funding and purposeful resources, is pleased to announce the three recipients of its Dewey Awards grant: Sankore' Collegiate Preparatory Academy in Atlanta, Ivy Academia in Los Angeles, and Stargate Charter School in Thornton, Colorado. Now in its sixth year, this annual grant competition recognizes and celebrates stories of gratitude to educators across the country who have changed the trajectory of students' lives.
Each year, a Dewey Awards review committee made up of charter school operators and advocates not competing for the grants reviews and selects the three submissions they find the most compelling. Charter School Capital then donates three $1,000 grants to each of the three charter schools chosen by the winning participants. This year's recipients were chosen from among nearly 200 video or written entries.
The Dewey Awards were founded in 2017 by Stuart Ellis, CEO of Charter School Capital, in honor of Richard Dewey, his third-grade teacher at Welby Way Elementary School in the Los Angeles Unified School District.
"We all remember those special teachers we had growing up and how they positively impacted our lives," said Ellis. "It's usually later in life that we recognize how profound their influence was, and at Charter School Capital we are thrilled that we can pay tribute to educators for the way they change lives and, indeed, our society."

Sankore' Collegiate Preparatory Academy
A video submitted by Dr. Darian C. Jones, Ph.D., school vision founder and conductor at Sankore' Collegiate Preparatory Academy in Atlanta, was submitted in honor of Esquirido Braddy, his 7th grade English teacher in North Carolina whose unwavering guidance four decades ago provided him with a love of literature and a path to a distinguished career as an educator. The $1,000 grant will go to Sankore' Collegiate Preparatory Academy, set to launch in 2024.
"Finally, an educator realized that I was bored, and not bad, and that made all the difference," said Jones. "If you look beyond the behaviors and realize there is a child back there screaming for help and attention, that will make all the difference."
Ivy Academia
A video submitted by Chris Vanderhorst, a visual arts teacher at Ivy Academia in Los Angeles, was submitted in honor of Dmitry Kogan, a history teacher also at Ivy Academia known for instilling a love of learning and creating a positive learning environment through his tireless mentoring of his students. The $1,000 grant will go to Ivy Academia.
"Mr. Kogan has really instilled a love of learning in our kids, and he's created a really positive environment, and I really admire him for that," said Vanderhorst.
Stargate Charter School
An essay by Lisa Griffith was submitted in honor of Dana O'Neill, a physical education teacher at Stargate Charter School in Thornton, Colorado, who helped inspire Griffith's sixth-grade son to overcome physical challenges and eventually become an accomplished distance runner in high school. The $1,000 grant will go to Stargate Charter School.
"I'm so grateful that Ms. O'Neill saw my son as more than the kid who finished last in the mile run," said Griffith. "It's not an exaggeration to say that if she had not looked beyond my son's limitations and encouraged him over the course of three years, he wouldn't be running today. She changed the trajectory of my son's life both physically and mentally."
