"FUTURE OF WORK IN AN AGE OF AUTOMATION, ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND TECHNOLOGY" by James Oon Beng Lau, Eliva Press, 2022
Eliva Press publishing company is to announce the release for the newest book title: "FUTURE OF WORK IN AN AGE OF AUTOMATION, ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND TECHNOLOGY" by James Oon Beng Lau
CHISINAU, Moldova , March 26, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Book has 4 chapters each of which can be read on its own with a common underlying theme giving an inter-disciplinary and multi-country perspective.
Chapter 1 sets out the historical context that humankind's non-organic evolution is inextricably linked to the ability to invent and develop tools to overcome physical and geographical limitations and that work domain expertise is a pre-requisite of useful work tools.
Chapter 2 provides a historical perspective where despite warnings that employment and wage polarization will be the outcome where automation is used to replace blue-collar industrial labour, this anticipated outcome has become a reality in United Kingdom ("U.K.") and the United States of America ("U.S.A.") since 1980s resulting in hollowing out of the working middle class and, consequently, the urgent need for public policy measures to change this present reality in some advanced countries and to avert this outcome for developing countries with author's recommendations.
After setting out the public policy measures needed to offset the labour-substituting impact from the adoption of automation, artificial intelligence and technology in Chapter 2, Author has, for completeness, set out the complementary and corresponding personal responsibility of labour to embrace lifelong learning in order to remain continually employable throughout their useful working lives in Chapter 3.
Chapter 4 is an industry-specific chapter detailing real-life instances of biased and unfair outcomes from the adoption and use of automation, artificial intelligence and technology in criminal and social justice in Australia, U.K. and U.S.A. with notable examples of technological and non-technological innovations for civil and criminal justice.
Author decided not to have a concluding book chapter with my forecast of the future as to whether there will be temporary or permanent technological unemployment or a jobless future following the wisdom of American author & futurist, Alvin Toffler (October 1928 to June 2016) that "[f]orecasts tend to become self-fulfilling or self-defeating" but for this to be a living chapter for you and I to co-create the future we would like our children, grandchildren and future generations following the signposts given by:
Alvin Toffler (October 1928 to June 2016):-
"Avoiding future shock as he rides the waves of change, he must master evolution, shaping tomorrow to human need. Instead of rising in revolt against it, he must, from this historic moment on, anticipate and design the future…
For this is the supreme instant, the turning point in history at which man either vanquishes the processes of change or vanishes, from being the unconscious puppet of evolution he becomes either its victim or its master." (emphasis by underlining added)
and Norbert Wiener (November 1894 to March 1964), Father of Cybernetics, :-
"No, the future offers very little hope for those who expect that our new mechanical slaves will offer us a world in which we may rest from thinking. Help us they may, but at the cost of supreme demands upon our honesty and our intelligence. The world of the future will be an ever more demanding struggle against the limitations of our intelligence, not a comfortable hammock in which we can lie down to be waited upon by our robot slaves."
Reviews:
"Drawing on an impressive range of sources, James Lau presents constructive proposals for implementing and regulating artificial intelligence in the interest of the whole society. His book is a valuable analysis of the technological, organizational, and legal issues of today's automation, in the great humanist tradition of Norbert Wiener's "The Human Use of Human Beings.""
Edward Tenner, - Author of "The Efficiency Paradox, What Big Data Can't Do" (2018)
"James Lau's book clearly reflects a very dedicated, long-term commitment to researching, and pondering the implications, of this topic. I was particularly interested in Chapters on the Future of Work and Lifelong Learning (Chapters 2 and 3). I liked the way he carefully distilled the impact of technological change and offered some very well-researched practical suggestions as to how our societies can successfully adapt to these and maintain social cohesion. Chapter 4 concisely identified key issues for the legal profession to consider in addressing impact of technological change, both on the nature of the work performed by lawyers and on the way that law is enacted and enforced."
