Already Struggling, Moms Have a Whole New Set of Issues to Add to Their Plate
New Research shows moms are struggling with the struggle, with over 70% of moms Feeling stressed, overwhelmed and exhausted
NEW YORK, May 6, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- New research conducted by the Benenson Strategy Group (BSG,) a strategic research consultancy, reveals how moms in America are feeling these days and the newest set of issues that are weighing on them. The report, Pulse: The Mom Edition, was comprised from BSG interviews with over 800 moms with young kids to understand their views on recent issues such as inflation, abortion, climate change, and how to cope through the next phase of the pandemic. Though moms' negative feelings such as exhaustion, stress and anxiety are pervasive, 47% of moms still feel grateful. However, the findings clearly illustrate that moms want change-primarily from their husbands and their employers-in how they approach parenting roles and policies.
Among the key findings:
1. Pocketbook concerns have eclipsed COVID-19 fears. Moms are almost twice as likely to say they worry on a daily basis about inflation and the rising cost of goods and services (71%) or gas prices (68%), as they worry about a future surge in COVID-19 rates (37%). These financial worries are forcing major changes in lifestyle and consumption habits of what moms buy and where they buy it from.
2. Moms are making major lifestyle changes to cope with economic pressures. Inflation and rising costs have moms buying fewer things, cutting back on special treats and putting off big purchases. With Summer right around the corner just over half of moms (51%) say they will put off or cancel a summer vacation. 72% say they will drive less so they don't have to fill up on gas as often.
3. Moms are overwhelmed and demanding change from their husbands. 7 in 10 moms feel burned out, compared to just 5 in 10 dads. To balance the scales, Moms want a culture shift that encourages dads to rearrange their work schedules to play a more prominent role in child-related responsibilities (though not all dads agree).
4. Moms are calling on employers to do more. To help alleviate some of the pressures moms are feeling, there is support for a variety of reforms to help working parents, including company policies that encourage dads to take their employer-provided parental leave (89%) and requiring companies to provide fully paid parental leave (87%).
Methodology
Benenson Strategy Group conducted 806 online interviews with moms who have kids under the age of 18. The survey was fielded from April 14-20, 2022. The data was weighted to reflect U.S. Census data to ensure an accurate demographic representation.
