“Undocumented individuals and their families, who are faced with the overwhelming challenges of navigating their education and careers, deserve equal access to paid initiatives specific to their interests,” said Tomas Ramos, founder and CEO of Oyate Group.
NEW YORK (PRWEB) February 01, 2023
Oyate Group, a nonprofit organization with the mission to alleviate poverty and empower underserved communities all across New York City, is announcing the opening of its application process for the 2023 Beyond Rising Internship, a program to support undocumented youth, hosted in partnership with The Center for Community Engaged Learning at Fordham University. The program first launched in 2022 as part of an effort to offer undocumented high school students from across the city access to paid opportunities to receive mentoring and skills training while exploring their passions by interning in various Fordham University administrative offices.
“Undocumented individuals and their families, who are faced with the overwhelming challenges of navigating their education and careers, deserve equal access to paid initiatives specific to their interests,” said Tomas Ramos, founder and CEO of Oyate Group. “Oyate Group and Fordham University are committed to mitigating the complexities of migrant assimilation, especially in critically under-resourced neighborhoods that produce so few opportunities for youth enrichment. We hope others will join us in creating spaces for undocumented youth to become inspired and obtain necessary career development skills.”
Bolstering its mission towards creating successful paths of integration for undocumented youth into both academic and professional spaces, Oyate Group and Fordham University offer participants one of two tracks to explore potential careers. Applicants may choose between the research project track or the general professional development track, both of which will be filled by 15 select participants. Students of the 2022 internship were placed into positions at locations such as Fordham University’s Office of the Dean , athletic department and as participants in contemporary research surrounding topics ranging from education to biomedicine.
Undocumented individuals ages 16-18 residing in the Bronx, Harlem or Washington Heights are strongly encouraged to apply to join the Beyond Rising Internship Program this summer from July 6 - August 11 during which they will work Monday - Thursday from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Each Friday, enrichment activities will be conducted at the Oyate offices at 10 a.m., and students will be provided a weekly stipend of $500 via Visa gift card.
In addition to the Beyond Rising Internship program, Oyate Group works to create access to healthcare, reform gun violence, alleviate hunger and invest in the growth of small businesses. The organization is best known for vaccinating 40,000 New Yorkers deemed “unreachable” against COVID-19 across the Bronx and Washington Heights in 2021 through its Bronx Rising Initiative.
