The 5 artists exhibiting at SOFA include:
Corrine Haverinen, Studio 31, Backstreet Studios, https://www.have-art.net/
Haverinen has been in her SOFA studio since 2017. She paints graceful landscapes and trees on papers, including rice paper, from the Far East. When asked where her inspiration comes from, Haverinen replies, “I’m inspired by Chinese and Japanese paintings as well as by pointillist painters throughout history.”
Suzanne Edminster, Studio 32, A Street Studios, https://saltworkstudio.com/
Edminster creates large acrylic abstract paintings influenced by ancient stories. When asked where she finds inspiration, Edminster replies, “I find inspiration in ancient art, cave art, petroglyphs, and art from the Middle Ages, as well as themes from mysticism and mythology.” Botticelli and Chagall are among Edminster’s favorite artists from history.
Christie Marks, Studio 33, A Street Studios, https://www.christiemarksart.com/
Marks is known for her gritty mixed media works incorporating everyday materials such as brown paper bags. Human rather than natural landscapes inspire her. Marks says,“I search for moments from everyday life that deepen my experience of humanity and empathy.” Marks is also influenced by photography, particularly that of 1930’s artists such as Dorothea Lange.
Karen Lynn Ingalls, Studio 34, Backstreet Studios, http://www.karenlynningalls.com/
Ingalls describes the inspiration for her colorist landscapes of rural California this way, “The earth inspires me, California inspires me! It’s the land, trees, skies, flowers, colors of the vines, and the golden hour at sunset. We live in a beautiful corner of the earth. How can one not be inspired?” 2023 is Ingalls’s first year in Art at the Source.
Patricia Reilly, Studio 35, 445 Sebastopol Ave, https://www.patriciajanereilly.com/
Reilly’s new SOFA District jewelry shop is truly delightful. She is a metalsmith and enamelist working with glass enamels fused to precious metals. Reilly names Rennie Mackintosh as a significant influence, citing the spare grace and elegance of his designs. Asked what advice she’d give an aspiring artist, Reilly says, “Find people who believe in your art and believe them!”
