Newly released report from Hanover Research highlights trends for the year 2023-24 school year, including debt-free education and increased marketing spending.

Hanover Research, a leading provider of data and insights to higher education leaders, has released its annual Trends in Higher Education Report. Drawing from our work with nearly 500 universities and colleges across the nation, the newly released report offers a comprehensive perspective of the overall higher education landscape. As institutions adjust to keep pace with new ways to deliver instruction and services, this report highlights imperatives for improving student engagement, demonstrating academic value, and providing diverse sources of revenue.

“Higher ed Institutions are feeling an urgency to embrace alternative strategies and data-driven research to identify and solve systemic problems,” says Paul Gibson, managing director of higher education, Hanover Research. “In our 2023 Higher Education Trends report, we outline trends that will shape higher education over the years to come as it is clear colleges and universities can no longer afford to focus exclusively on traditional students or established models of teaching, funding, and marketing. Administrators and faculty have the potential to transform long-term academic approaches by embracing inventive strategies that attract and engage students without sacrificing educational quality or financial stability.”

Key trends examined in the report include:

· Career-Focused Learning Flourishes in Modernized, Stackable Formats
· Debt-Free Education Captures Attention
· Institutions Rework Financial Models and Revenue Streams to Attain Sustainability
· Inclusion and Support Services Build Connection, Acceptance, and Success
· Increased Marketing Spending Puts Pressure on Quantifiable Results

Hanover’s analysis found that the core function of an institution hasn’t changed; but institutions can secure their place as an appealing, competitive destination for years to come by bridging longtime best practices with a close eye on current and future opportunities. The data and analysis in the report will allow academic leaders to craft strategies to successfully seize this pivotal moment.

“Our experience advising and collaborating with hundreds of colleges and universities has given us both a broad and deep view of the current academic landscape” says Sid Phillips, chief growth officer, Hanover Research. “Institutions that stay current with the needs of students and the industries that will employ them are best positioned to grow enrollment and stay competitive in the years ahead. In this report, we highlight the key issues that require thought, data, and feedback to prepare us for the next generation of higher education.”
