Biochar Life, PBC, ("Biochar Life") an impact venture of Warm Heart Worldwide ("Warm Heart") is pleased to announce an amendment to their purchase agreement with Carbonfuture which includes increasing delivery of c-sink credits to 100,000 tonnes of CO2eq over the next 3 years. This 10 fold increase from 10,000 to 100,000 tonnes reflects Biochar Life's rapid expansion and growing capacity to meet the fast rising global demands for carbon removal credits (c-sink credits) while helping smallholder farmers around the world. The scale up in plans also includes an exciting new strategic partnership with Carbon4Good & PlantVillage from Penn State University, helping to increase trust in verification via the PlantVillage software and maximize impact as the the team increases production with smallholder farmers and local communities across Africa.
HIGHLAND PARK, N.J., March 9, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Biochar Life works with smallholder ("SMH") farmers throughout the world, teaching them to create biochar from crop waste instead of burning it on their fields. A process that slows climate change, cleans the environment, improves public health and alleviates poverty through income generated from the sale of the carbon removal credits (c-sink credits). Since their official launch in March 2022, following the accreditation of the European Biochar Certification ("EBC") Artisan standard with the Ithaka Institute; Biochar Life is now operational in 8 countries with a goal to expand to 40 countries by 2025. Their work in developing countries also helps communities to increase crop yields, reduce fertilizer use, and sequester carbon in the soil. A benefit to the environment and to the smallholder farmers whose livelihoods are improved.
"We're thrilled to continue our partnership with Carbonfuture and to further our commitment to sustainable agriculture and carbon sequestration," said Jason Highberger, CEO of Biochar Life. "This updated purchase agreement will enable us to have an even greater impact on the environment and on the lives of smallholder farmers around the world. We look forward to furthering our work with Carbonfuture and to building a more sustainable future for all."
"Our continued partnership with Biochar Life and support for their mission signifies our commitment to promoting sustainable agriculture and carbon sequestration through the creation of biochar. By facilitating the issuance and sales of 100,000 tonnes of CO2eq removal credits, we aim to help Biochar Life meet the fast-rising global demand for carbon removal credits while supporting smallholder farmers around the world." Hannes Junginger, CEO of Carbonfuture.
Biochar Life's continued success can also be attributed to their ability in building an effective partner model as part of The Carbon Consortium. As well as Biochar Life, the Carbon Consortium now includes Carbon4Good and PlantVillage. PlantVillage, a global public good at Penn State University is a global leader in the delivery of agricultural knowledge that helps small holder farmers adapt to climate change. It operates in over 60 countries and 30 languages with the United Nations and reaches over 14 million farmers/week with climate change advice. It is a twin winner of the Carbon XPRIZE (Student Prize and Milestone Award). The PlantVillage technology will be used to provide more enhanced tracking and recording of carbon removal activities while offering researchers access to valuable data. These are essential elements to ensure Biochar Life and Carbon4Good can keep up with the global demands for carbon removal credits (c-sink credits) while supporting the scientific community.
"We are delighted to partner with Biochar Life and Carbon Future on this excellent first step to achieve gigatonne scale carbon capture and storage that transforms the lives of smallholding farming communities who have contributed the least to climate change but are paying the highest price" said David Hughes, founder of PlantVillage, Carbon4Good and the Dorothy Foehr Huck and J. Lloyd Huck Chair in Global Food Security at the Pennsylvania State University.
Biochar Life's partnership with Carbonfuture plays a crucial role in ensuring the organization can continue to expand effectively and meet their objectives of improving the livelihoods of smallholder farmers around the world whilst actively removing CO2 from the atmosphere for thousands of years.
