Chris Ligori Takes on Lawmakers to Urge Reform and Protect Citizens' Rights Against Insurance Companies

TAMPA, Fla., April 3, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Chris Ligori of Christopher Ligori & Associates is going up against big insurance companies and lawmakers in Florida to protect Floridians against tort reform efforts taking place in Tallahassee that would allow for insurance company abuse.
Florida House Bill 837 was filed on February 15, 2023. If the Bill becomes law, the rights of injured victims in the state will be in jeopardy, and the people of Florida will be at the mercy of big name insurance companies. Chris Ligori refuses to step aside and watch that happen.
"I have made it my personal mission to fight Tallahassee lawmakers trying to pass bills that side with the insurance companies and not the taxpayers and victims," said Ligori. "We need to make sure that our citizens are protected— our drivers, our friends and families all deserve it," said Ligori.
HB 837 Would Bring Unfortunate Changes to Florida's Civil Justice System
If this legislation passes, it would strip Floridians of the right to hold liable parties accountable for the totality of damages that they cause. Medical expenses in catastrophic injury cases could be capped at 140% of the Medicaid rate. The contributory negligence standard of fault would be followed in tort cases. This standard would enable at-fault parties to get off the hook for causing injuries to other people if they are determined to be 49% or less at fault for the incident. Additionally, someone who is determined to be 52% at fault would only be responsible for paying for 52% of the victim's damages.
The legislation would also expose policyholders and third-party claimants to abuse by insurance companies. It would remove current protections that prevent them from delaying or denying valid claims.
HB 837 also reduces the statute of limitations in injury cases based on negligence. Currently, Florida imposes a four-year limitation on negligence actions. If the legislation passes, the statute of limitations will be reduced to two years.
"We need to stand together and speak up against these proposed reforms," said Ligori, who is strongly urging people to call their House representatives and ask them to vote against HB 837. He is also encouraging people to call the Florida State Senator and request that they vote against SB 236.
"These are important causes that affect so many people we care about," Ligori said. "We cannot stand by and let these insurance companies continue to act in bad faith."
