CGI.Backgrounds' new report shows the company's climate impact and the enormous benefits of virtual production in the media, entertainment, and advertising industries
DETROIT, April 13, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- In celebration of Earth Day, CGI.Backgrounds, a company providing high-resolution HDRi Maps and Backplates for the 3D design industry, has released a report detailing the climate benefits of virtual production technology.
Over the company's nearly two-decade history, its virtual production technologies and partnerships have saved an estimated 1.92 million tons of CO2 emissions, equivalent to the annual energy use of 250,940 American homes, the report shares.
Virtual production and associated innovations including LED walls have become a game-changing technology for television studios, production companies, and advertisers. They allow for production of full television shows, commercials and product shoots without the need to send crews, talent, or props on-location.
As CGI.Backgrounds' report shows, the reduced need for travel, physical sets, generators, and shipping results in major climate benefits. While producing a typical feature film or television episode can release 2,800 tons of CO2 (enough for 11 round trips to the moon), virtual production reduces these emissions by as much as 95%--while also cutting costs and time.
By participating in approximately 100 virtual productions per year for companies including many in the Fortune 500, CGI.Backgrounds has contributed to an estimated 1,992,176 tons of CO2 emissions reduction over its 20-year history.
"We are proud of the role CGI.Backgrounds has played in pioneering the use of HDRi Maps in virtual production," said CEO Randal Cumming. "We hope that our report inspires more production companies and brands to adopt these versatile, green technologies."
CGI.Backgrounds recently took a major step towards expanding access to climate-friendly virtual production by allowing free access to thousands of HDRi Maps and Backplates from its extensive library. The company also launched a low-cost Student plan, giving a new generation of creatives the tools they need to create climate-friendly productions.
The full report, and more information about virtual production, are available on CGI.Backgrounds' website.
