For the sixth consecutive year, StreetLight releases the industry validated U.S. AADT 2022 metrics for nearly every roadway including highways, local, and rural roads
SAN FRANCISCO, April 20, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- StreetLight Data, Inc. (StreetLight) the leading Big Data company providing insights into how people, goods, and services move, today made its sixth annual, 2022 Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT) counts available to U.S. transportation planners and other industry professionals to better inform infrastructure investment decisions. Traffic counts remain an essential metric for federal reporting, supporting Safe Streets for All (SS4A) grant applications, and achieving Bipartisan Infrastructure Law emissions goals. With deadlines for FHWA's Highway Performance Monitoring System (HPMS) reporting and SS4A grants around the corner, transportation professionals can now get the most recent AADT counts to help advance their applications and create more efficient, safe, and sustainable transportation systems for all.
Respected as a key purveyor of mobility data and analytics, StreetLight and its AADT metrics are utilized by several DOTs in the U.S. for their federal reporting, including HPMS and FHWA's Model Inventory of Roadway Elements (MIRE) requirements. StreetLight's defensible traffic counts for all local, urban, and suburban roads, help inform projects ranging from NEPA, existing conditions reports, safety, congestion, and roadway maintenance plans. With StreetLight, organizations can now quickly analyze traffic trends by comparing the new 2022 AADT counts to historic AADT counts (for 2019, 2020 and 2021) and consider the impact of changing traffic patterns from before the pandemic all the way through the "new normal" of 2022. Traditional traffic data collection methods have always been cumbersome, involving planning, collection, and a lengthy approval process. They've also been costly, unsafe for staff, and hard to obtain, especially for rural roads.
In contrast, StreetLight makes validated AADT counts readily available on a web browser via the StreetLight InSight® application. To ensure StreetLight provides the most reliable counts, they have undergone essential and rigorous validation against traditional and industry-standard methods, including an FHWA-led pooled study that evaluated non-traditional methods of data collection. StreetLight's comprehensive validation ensures transparency and validity of its methodology, delivering AADT metrics that meet industry benchmarks for all road sizes.
"StreetLight has made its name on comprehensive mobility data that planners and other industry professionals can count on, no matter the location, time of day, month or year," said StreetLight CEO Laura Schewel. "The 2022 AADT counts are the data-driven bookend to a tumultuous time that saw traffic patterns change in ways the world has never seen. It's fluctuations like those that underline the critical need for our annual AADT release."
AADT in Use
According to Operation Lifesaver, collisions with trains accounted for over 270 fatalities and 760 injuries in 2022. StreetLight experts conducted an internal analysis of AADT at over 1,300 at-grade railroad crossings in Montana. Over 80% of these public railroad crossings lie outside of urbanized areas in the state. Results highlighted a few higher-volume crossings like Joslyn St. and N. Rouse Ave. in Helena, Montana, which saw over 18% and 11% increases in traffic volume, respectively, from 2021 to 2022.As part of the IIJA, nearly $3 billion in competitive grants has been allocated over the next five years to fund the nationwide removal of at-grade railroad crossings. Grant applications submitted to the Railroad Crossing Elimination Program can benefit from recent, accurate AADT counts at sites that inform exposure models and justify the efficacy of a project.
StreetLight's proprietary data processing engine transforms trillions of mobility data points over time from connected vehicles, traffic sensors, and other connected devices into standard transportation metrics. Available for all road types big and small, the company's 2022 AADT counts meet industry-standard accuracy targets, as published today in StreetLight's 2022 AADT Methodology and Validation white paper, available on request.
To learn more about the importance and application of up-to-date 2022 AADT counts at scale, transportation professionals from cities, DOTs, consulting, and the private sector can attend the upcoming StreetLight webinar AADT for All Roads on April 26th.
