Medina, Ohio (May 2023) GBA Architectural Products + Services of Medina, Ohio (GBA), a glass block restoration specialist and the largest installer of glass block products in the U.S., recently completed the restoration of the original glass of a historic New York landmark. The glass restoration was part of the $111 million renovation of the former Triboro Hospital for Tuberculosis in Queens, which has been transformed into affordable housing. The 10-story Art Moderne-style "T Building," as it was locally known, was completed in 1938. Its restoration began with the award of a lease from the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development in 2018 to the developer, Dunn Development Corp. The award stipulated that the former hospital be used for low- and middle-income residential housing. Steve Boesch, GBA's Vice President, notes that the glass block in the newly restored T Building still offers the effects and benefits it did in 1938. "It is an enduring, functional product that has withstood the test of time. It bridges eras with its unique qualities—durability and light transmission while governing separation, privacy, and noise."

As recipients of state and federal tax credits, developers were required to retain the T Building's historically significant architectural elements, such as glass block windows, a popular design feature of the era and featured prominently in the design of the first floor of the hospital. Bill Harwood, senior project manager for general contractor Mega Contracting Group says, "One of the most difficult challenges was finding capable and qualified subcontractors for the key restoration trades that are both committed to quality construction and respectful of the historical restoration process … GBA provided the essential expertise and quality craftsmanship that this project needed."
Finding the right restoration specialists were critical to the project's success as a Federal and New York State Historic Tax Credit project," says project consultant Mary Kay Judy, principal of Mary Kay Judy Architectural & Cultural Heritage Conservation. "Fortunately, GBA's craftsmen delivered very high quality workmanship and historical authenticity in restoring this historic building. She continues that GBA's contribution and commitment were invaluable to the project's success which went on to win multiple high-profile New York City and New York state preservation awards. As a restoration consultant on many such challenging projects, I would sincerely welcome the opportunity to work with GBA again. And as a native of Northeast Ohio, I could not be prouder such talent hails from Medina, Ohio." About GBA Architectural Products + Services.
