The week-long event aims to showcase the value of naturopathic medicine to patients, prospective patients, public policy makers, reporters, and community leaders through various creative activities, events, and messages.
The origins of Naturopathic Medicine Week date back to 2013 when the US Senate unanimously passed S. Res. 221, creating the first-ever U.S. Naturopathic Medicine Week. The resolution recognizes the value of naturopathic medicine in providing "safe, effective, and affordable health care…" and encourages Americans to learn about the role of naturopathic doctors (NDs) in preventing chronic and debilitating conditions.
Naturopathic medicine is a distinct primary health care profession, emphasizing prevention, treatment, and optimal health through the use of therapeutic methods and substances that encourage individuals' inherent self-healing process. The practice of naturopathic medicine includes modern and traditional modalities, and encompasses a range of therapies, including botanical and herbal medicine, nutritional medicine, lifestyle counseling, naturopathic physical manipulation, and much more.

Recent celebrations have seen Naturopathic Medicine Week moved from October to May to align with the Canadian Association of Naturopathic Doctors (CAND) and amplify the messages of the week. The AANP collaborated with the Institute for Natural Medicine (INM) to come up with this year's theme and messaging in the United States: "Naturopathic Medicine: Rooted in Whole Person Health."
