AUSTIN, Texas, Sept. 10, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The 360 Neuro Health Institute co-hosted with Dell Children's Medical Center of Central Texas is proud to announce the 2019 Concussion Health Summit and Town Hall Event in Austin, Texas at Dell Children's Medical Center of Central Texas on Friday, September 27 to Sunday, September 29, 2019. This event will attract healthcare and education professionals from a variety of disciplines as well as community stakeholders.

Undeniably, the consequences of sports-related concussions have become a growing concern and the need for education is paramount. Sports-related concussions are a significant public health issue due to the large number of people who incur these injuries each year, the generally young age of athletes at the time of injury, and the potential cumulative effects and serious consequences of head trauma. This issue has prompted rule changes across sports. Most states have enacted laws covering their high school activities. Still, controversies and challenges continue about the risk factors, evaluation, management, and return-to-play protocols.

"It is important to understand both the risks and benefits of sports participation, so that our kids can enjoy the fun and fitness of sports while preventing and treating injuries," said Keynote Speaker, Christopher Giza, MD, Professor of Pediatric Neurology and Neurosurgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine and Mattel Children's Hospital and director of the UCLA Steve Tisch BrainSPORT program.

The Program Planning Committee has assembled a faculty with clinical experts to provide opportunities for approved continuing education. "Allowing participants and our esteemed faculty to continue dialogue in the traumatic brain injury (TBI) world will enable allied health professionals to stay informed on the ever changing information and treatment highway," said Mark A. By emphasizing the importance of a multi-disciplinary approach, this event will address concussion management across the sports lifespan. Concussion management requires a network of specialty providers to ensure patients are accurately diagnosed and effectively treated.

Dr. Pyron also serves as adjunct professor at University of Texas Dell Medical School, the University of Texas at Austin, and is the team Physician for the BOLD soccer team as well as Medical Director for the Austin Marathon and other major community sporting events.

The Concussion Town Hall Event kicks off on Sunday, September 29th at 8:00am with presentations from world-renowned experts. Following the morning session is an interactive event with open discussions and question & answer sessions among healthcare providers, advocates, and individuals who have suffered a concussion, as well as loved ones and caregivers.

FREE Balance Performance Baseline Testing will be available to 100 student-athletes. It takes less than ten minutes and includes:

• Symptom Assessment - symptom questionnaire and medical history
• Single Leg Stance (eyes closed) - ankle stability
• Heel-Toe Walking - a test sensitive to changes in balance after concussion
• Oculomotor Tests - eye movements which are related to performance
• Visual-Vestibular Interaction - high level balance tests when relying on your inner ear and visual system; a test sensitive to changes in balance after concussion
