9th Annual Walk to End Lupus Now
Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) April 21, 2015 -- On Saturday, May 2nd, 2015, board certified ophthalmologist Dr. William Segal and the rest of his team from Georgia Eye Physicians and Surgeons will join the annual Walk to End Lupus Now, being held in Piedmont Park by the Lupus Foundation of America (LFA). Last year’s Atlanta Walk proved to be the largest LFA-sponsored walk in the nation, hosting more than 8,000 walkers in an effort to raise funds and awareness for lupus, an unpredictable and potentially fatal autoimmune disease that currently affects over 55,000 Georgians.
Dr. William Segal, Dr. Marc Lay, and the entire Georgia Eye Physicians and Surgeons family have maintained a longstanding relationship with the LFA, with Dr. Segal personally serving as a member of its Medical Advisory Board for almost 10 years. At last year’s Atlanta Walk, the Segal Eye Docs team was recognized as the largest medical walk team in attendance, and raised $2,298 for the cause, placing it in the top 10% of donors overall.
“I was very proud last year that we got such an amazing turn-out for such a great cause,” said Dr. Segal. “We’re campaigning even harder this year because lupus patients and their families need the Georgia Chapter, their programs, services and support, now more than ever.”
Despite its prevalence, lupus remains one of the least recognizable and most misunderstood diseases in both the medical and lay communities. This year the Georgia Chapter of the Lupus Foundation of America, one of the fastest growing LFA Chapters in the nation, hopes to raise more than $550,000 while “taking Lupus Awareness from a whisper to a shout and letting Georgia know that this is a worthy cause.” Ninety percent of every dollar donated stays in Georgia to allow the Chapter to provide and expand its free, statewide education programs, advocacy and awareness efforts including nine symposiums as well as advocacy and new support groups to reach new communities and new patients. The Chapter also supports the national LFA research efforts funding and advocating for investment in lupus.
