New patent-pending tool simplifies alignment of intraoral dental scans with 3D face scans

The new patent-pending Visual Smile Aligner™ tool is now shipping as part of the company's recently introduced Dental Pro software applications used in orthodontics, implantology, maxillofacial surgery, cosmetic dentistry and digital smile design practices.
The dental industry is adopting new 3D digital tools for the diagnosis, planning, and delivery of treatments. Combing a 3D scan of a patient's face with an embedded and correctly aligned intraoral scan of their teeth is becoming a preferred method for before and after visualization of dental treatment planning. Aligning these two 3D scans is time consuming, difficult, and error prone since the face scan and dental scans are captured separately using different hardware and software. Current facial scanning and alignment systems can require an extra scan of the patient's face with external markers so that the multiple scans can be aligned with common marker locations, which then need to be digitally removed for final visualization.
Bellus3D Visual Smile Aligner™ is a breakthrough in simplicity and accuracy for the alignment of these two 3D scans without requiring any external marker aids. The Dental Pro face scanning app automatically captures a high-resolution 2D photo of the patient's teeth during a 3D face scan, whose precise alignment with the 2D photo is known. The Visual Smile Aligner™ tool shows a visual overlay of the 3D dental scan, which has been automatically pre-aligned and superimposed over the 2D photo of the teeth. Simple on-screen controls are used to visually fine tune the alignment positioning and angular increments. By precisely matching the projected image of the 3D dental scan with the teeth image in the high-resolution 2D photo, a very accurate alignment between the 3D face and the dental scans can be accomplished in a few minutes. The process is simple and intuitive to operate resulting in improved workflow efficiency and alignment accuracy.
