AUSTIN, Texas, Feb. 21, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Having returned 2-weeks ago from a new project in Brazil, Russell C. (RC) Crawford, inventor, 2018 recipient of the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office's "Patents for Humanity" Award Recipient and Co-Founder of One Millions Wells continues his vision of providing access to clean water on a worldwide scale. Crawford said "This problem can only be solve through teaching people how to reach the water that is often just meters beneath their feet." RC was granted, with the assistance of Bill Hulsey Patent Lawyer, U.S. Patent No. 9,915,113, entitled "WELL DRILLING APPARATUS AND METHOD OF USE." Today, Crawford continues to advance his patent holdings in this important area with a newly published patent application, US 2018-0266180 A1, of the same title. In late 2018. the USPTO presented him with the national "Patents for Humanity" Award, recognizing his important contributions to mankind.
Russell C. (RC) Crawford is a visionary scientist, engineer, and inventor with over 40 years of experience drilling wells all over the world. His personal goal is to drill a million wells in his lifetime, and he is well on his way to that goal with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and his patent attorney supporting his mission.
In November 2018, Crawford was one of a select group of recipients honored with the USPTO's "Patents for Humanity" Award, which recognizes inventors who have made life-changing contributions to mankind. Nominated by his Austin patent attorney, Bill Hulsey, the Co-Founder of the non-profit One Million Wells accepted the award in Washington, D.C., and spoke to his vision of providing access to clean water on a worldwide scale: "This problem can only be solved through teaching people how to reach the water that is often just meters beneath their feet."
The Crawford Drilling System: Crawford says that "Access to clean drinking water is a problem for over 800 million people worldwide and kills many people each year." A common solution to the problem is drilling wells. However, most wells are shallow wells that become contaminated with mud and debris from the surface, which can bring dangerous chemicals such as arsenic into the water supply. As a result, estimates suggest that 30 to 50% of wells drilled in Africa are no longer suitable for drinking water.
Crawford set out to fix this problem, designing a method to reach deeper aquifers hundreds of feet deep and avoid contamination while being inexpensive, easy to transport, and capable of use by two drillers without heavy equipment. Mr. Crawford licensed his technology to the Institute for Transformational Technology at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratories. He spent a month in India and Zimbabwe teaching locals how to operate his drill. He has also licensed his technology to others for use in Mexico, Brazil, Peru, and the United States. Small businesses in Africa are using his drilling technology to generate income for poor families. He and his co-founder Sam Crawford created the non-profit One Million Wells to provide drilling equipment and instruction at no charge in developing countries.
The USPTO launched the Patents for Humanity Awards program in February 2012 to spotlight innovations in five categories of pressing global needs: medicine, nutrition, sanitation, energy, and living standards. "Each of these recipients showcases the power of innovation to help the less fortunate around the globe," said Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and USPTO Director Andrei Iancu. "By recognizing and honoring these innovators whose creativity and curiosity dared them to solve some of the toughest humanitarian challenges, we hope this program will continue to inspire countless more to follow in their footsteps." Along with the award, recipients receive a certificate to accelerate certain matters before the Office.
