CGTN America releases "Response to Pelosi's Provocation over Taiwan"
The People's Liberation Army (PLA) has conducted joint operation drills in the Taiwan Strait in response to U.S. politician Nancy Pelosi's highly provocative trip to Taiwan.
On August 2, Pelosi sneaked into Taiwan, becoming the first Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives to visit the island in 25 years. Her trip has drawn swift criticism around the world for her reckless, high-profile, and unnecessary provocation at a time when relations between China and the U.S. are at an all-time low. Even U.S. President Joe Biden was reported as saying the Pentagon didn't think it was a great idea.
CGTN has produced a series of in-depth programs. In a special World Insight program, experts explained why the military drills are so critical. They said the Chinese PLA's actions are a warning to the U.S. and demonstrate the PLA's determination and capability to protect the country's interests and uphold China's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
On another major talk show, The Point dissected Pelosi's motivations. With the U.S. in the throes of major political and social turmoil, why did Pelosi ignore problems at home to manufacture a crisis abroad? The show took a deep dive into the political life of Nancy Pelosi, called by many a vain, opportunistic politician.
When the world needs increasing cooperation between the world's two largest economies to handle a persistent pandemic, supply chain shocks and a climate crisis, how did Pelosi's visit hurt those efforts? Did her visit have any legal standing? Why is the U.S. ignoring the historical facts of the Taiwan question? And how have the three joint communiques laid the legal foundation for diplomacy between the two countries? Those are some of the key questions we answered on "The Past and Present of the Taiwan Question."
