(PRWEB) February 19, 2019 -- Indiana Department of Transportation (DOT) installs InfraSteel Culvert Rehabilitation System to line a failing corrugated metal culvert under US 31 in Miami County, Indiana. The 144-inch diameter carbon steel liner is 245 feet in length. InfraSteel is a division of Precision Pipe and Products, Inc. According to Precision Pipe executive Cullom Walker, “One of the biggest factors for IntraSteel being chosen for this project was that lining a failing culvert avoids road closures and the need to detour traffic off the highway. US 31 is a heavily traveled north-south thoroughfare in Indiana. The opportunity cost associated with closing this highway was deemed too high by Indiana DOT so other options were investigated. Since the culvert had not failed, it was decided that lining it was the least disruptive and most cost-effective option for repair of the failing structure.”
InfraSteel culvert liners are made from smooth wall carbon steel in arched, elliptical or round shapes. They are custom manufactured for each culvert failure site. Extra copper is added to the steel to increase corrosion resistance. The InfraSteel® liner design life is calculated by adding sacrificial steel for each year of desired life expectancy to the wall thickness required to handle the existing load-bearing requirements. Walker adds, “Midwest Mole won the contract to repair the culvert. They unloaded the InfraSteel liner from delivery trucks to the construction pit. Steel runners were laid down into the bottom of the corrugated metal culvert to allow the steel liners to be pushed into place. A boring machine was used to push the sections together inside the culvert. Once in place, the sections were welded together. The contractor used cellular grout to fill the annular space between the corrugated metal culvert and the InfraSteel liner. This process increases the culvert structural integrity. The US 31 project is a great example of a culvert being rehabilitated before it fails.
