Majid Foroozandeh Advises Immigrants Facing Deportation Threat
Irvine, CA (PRWEB) May 03, 2017 -- In light of recent reporting by the New York Times and other news media outlets, it’s apparent that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is pursuing aggressive new protocols to round up and deport undocumented immigrants. Majid Foroozandeh, an Irvine-based attorney, is seeking to ensure that immigrants residing in the US are well-informed of their rights under the law.
For immigrants concerned about the prospect of an encounter with ICE, Foroozandeh recommends the following tips:
No. 1: Cooperate fully with the ICE agents but don’t sign any types of documents or any forms, such as the I-210 [Voluntary Departure and Verification of Departure] or the I-407 [Record of Abandonment of Lawful Permanent Resident Status] without first consulting an attorney. “Remember, just because you don’t have status doesn’t mean you don’t have rights,” said Foroozandeh.
No. 2: Create an emergency plan to be executed in the event one is taken into custody. An emergency plan should include arrangements for children and other dependents. Foroozandeh says, “In the event you are taken into custody, you will not have access to your phone. Memorize the phone numbers of at least two trusted friends or family members familiar with your emergency plan.”
No. 3: Prepare beforehand. Find support, resources and information through local community organizations. “Even if neither you nor anyone you know has had to deal with ICE, the time to consult an attorney is now. An attorney will help you fully understand and protect your rights and may even be able to help you adjust your immigration status to a lawful resident, as there are many ways this can be done,” said Foroozandeh.
As a matter of policy, Foroozandeh believes that mass deportation will ultimately prove unfeasible, “We can’t deport millions of people. It is not practical for the U.S,” he says. As an advocate for immigration reform rather than deportation, Foroozandeh believes that while immigration-related crime must be confronted, corresponding efforts must be made to provide hard-working illegal immigrants who pay their taxes with a way to attain legal citizenship.
