Nearly Half of Arizonans Over Age of 55 Are Without A Will or Trust, Finds New Report by Attorney Andrew S. Mathers
47% of Arizonans surveyed have no estate plan according to a report published by Gilbert Attorney Andrew S. Mathers.
GILBERT, Ariz., Nov. 25, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- This state-wide survey, conducted by estate planning attorney Andrew S. Mathers, surveyed 1,500 Arizonans over a three-day period.
Of the 1,500 Arizonans over 55 years old, 47% stated they did not have a will or trust.
For those over 65 years old, 39% responded they did not have a will or trust, indicating that more Arizonans plan for the future as they grow older, and that Arizonans are more likely than other Americans to have an estate plan.
Mr. Mathers, who opened his law firm in 2010, explained the importance of having a will or trust: "In short, a will ensures your wishes are carried out when you die. A trust does more. For example, a trust protects assets from taxes, defines a period of time over which they will be paid out, or keeps your family from having to endure drawn-out probate proceedings.
If you pass away without an estate plan, you will have died 'intestate' and the state of Arizona will determine how your property is distributed. This can leave your family vulnerable while they go through probate court."
