They run away across the Red River and into Oklahoma Territory to claim free land, only to face various trials. Because they run out of food, Riley leaves Ruth to go hunting. Due to storms and flooding, he is unable to return to her for 40 days. Through this whole ordeal, Ruth must survive not only physically but also emotionally and spiritually.
