Passive Building a Rising Trend in Architecture and Building
Fueled by Inflation Reduction Act Incentives and Extreme Climate-Driven Weather, 2023 Brings Mainstream Passive Building Adoption
CHICAGO, Jan. 30, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Today, Phius, the smartest path to a zero-carbon environment, announced record growth in adoption of passive building standards in North America, with a significant increase over the last year and exponential growth projected for 2023.
Phius, a non-profit, maintains a locally tailored, globally applicable passive house building standard accounting for certifying the vast majority of all passive projects in North America. Today, the organization has certified more than 3.4 million square feet of passive building projects that are optimized for adaptability and resilience as climate change redefines living standards.
In 2022, Phius nearly doubled the square footage of certified projects over the previous year, signifying a booming industry shift. As 2023 brings more climate-related issues, increased strain on power grids and the need for zero-energy innovation grows, mainstream adoption of and interest in passive building as the solution.
Guiding the industry, the Phius-certified passive building trend will shape and influence these building movements:
- Retrofitting existing buildings to meet Phius standards
- Examples include: Forever House (single-family), Prairie Trails Early Learning Center (school) and Theresa Passive House (single-family)
- Continuing expansion of passive building beyond single-family homes. In 2022, Phius certified the largest Phius project to date:425 Grand Concourse with more large-scale projects on the horizon
- Many of these are affordable housing projects with developers who receive a portion of their funding from state incentive programs or the Low Income Housing Tax Credit through the state's Qualified Allocation Plan
- Growing governmental support: 17 states have Phius in their Qualified Allocation Plans and 5 states are considering adopting Phius codes
