Within the last decade, Miami has suffered from a brief setback due to hurricanes Zika and Irma along with the economic decline of Miami’s main travel market, Brazil. In 2017, about 15.9 million people visited Miami, according to Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau, an increase of nearly 1 percent over the prior year. This increase has been accredited to a 2.3 percent growth by international tourists. Tourism trends seem to be growing for 2018, although the data will not be in until the end of the year.
Miami’s maintaining its long-held international reputation as a fun-in-the-sun tourist destination, with notable growth in its already booming tourism industry. Even with the major decrease in Brazilian tourists, the 2017 tourism has hit record high sales totaling 26 billion dollars. Scott Cooper Miami News reports 2017 received a 2.2 percent leap from the previous year, and although the numbers for this year are not in yet, it is expected to have continued in growth.
This number would come as a surprise to some who note the massive decline in Miami’s number one tourist source, Brazil. Brazilian tourism had plummeted by 26 percent down from 2016, and an additional 5 percent in 2017, due to the countries economic crisis. Scott Cooper Miami News found that Brazils decline in tourists was made up for by an increase in international tourists from elsewhere.
Even with the decrease in the Brazilian market, 2017 tourism hit record sales at 26 billion, which was a 2.1 percent increase from 2016. This boom is accounted for by a 2 percent increase in visitors from Columbia, an 8.2 percent increase from Argentina and a 12.5 percent increase by German tourists.
“Reports show that the most visited tourist spots include; the beaches, South Beach, Lincoln Road, Bayside Marketplace, and Downtown Miami,” Says Scott Cooper. The trends indicate that 2018 will show a growth in Miami’s tourism revenue, along with continued tourism from Germany, Argentina, and Colombia.
