The Fordham Real Estate Institute Deepens Focus on Construction Management with the Launch of Graduate Certificate
NEW YORK (PRWEB) February 13, 2019 -- The Bureau of Labor Statistics and Timetric’s Construction Intelligence Center (CIC) project that construction will be one of the fastest-growing industries into 2020. Since the recession, however, industry experts have struggled to find qualified talent to support this growth. As a direct response, the Fordham Real Estate Institute (REI) is pleased to announce the newest addition to its growing program: the launch of a Graduate Certificate in Construction Management.
Designed for individuals who are currently working in areas such as project management, architecture, engineering, development and more, courses will take place in the evening during the fall, spring and summer terms. Students can complete the program at their own pace, whether part-time or full-time.
“The launch of the Graduate Certificate in Construction Management underscores Fordham’s recognition of the correlation between its core program and the construction industry,” said Christopher Mills, Chief Operating Officer with Plaza Construction and member of REI’s Executive Advisory Council (EAC). “The core program teaches students areas of the business, such as financing and insuring projects, and the graduate certificate will teach the fundamental skills of building, which is where we’re seeing a gap in knowledge.”
The 15-credit program will also feature tracks on specialized legal, planning, financial, procurement, risk management, and project management skills that are required in today’s construction industry.
“One of the most unique aspects of the program is that it not only focuses on practical areas of the business, such as procurement, risk management, contract strategy and delivery, but it also includes business development training,” said Anthony Pastore, first vice president with Tishman AECOM and adjunct faculty member of the REI. “It is important for students to learn how to pursue work, whether in the public or private sector, and how to present to potential clients. Knowing what the latest technology is and how to utilize it for business pursuits will be critical.”
In addition to the new graduate course, the REI has established a Construction Committee on its EAC to address the unique needs of the industry.
“The committee’s goals include stimulating industry awareness, providing leadership in community relations, and maintaining sensitivity to the needs of underrepresented populations,” said Kiwesa King, PE, CCM, President of SureTech Engineering and member of the Committee. “In addition to identifying emerging trends and best practices, we’ll also recruit experts and mentors for Real Estate Institute activities.”
According to Construction Labor Contractors, professionals predict that the construction industry will have one of the largest increases in real output, reaching almost $1.2 trillion by next year, thanks in part to the efforts to modernize the country’s aging infrastructure.
“There are more opportunities than ever for those wishing to pursue a career in construction management, and we are confident that our new graduate certificate will help set professionals apart from others in the field,” said Dr. Anthony R. Davidson, Dean of Fordham’s School of Professional and Continuing Studies.
