The guide contains introductory lessons for HTML (Hypertext Markup Language), CSS (Cascading Stylesheets), SEO (Search Engine Optimization), and Web Design. Unlike, other guides, How To Build And Design A Website answers obvious questions that are often ignored by other guides (e.g. What exactly is a web page?).
"I find that a lot of technologists lack empathy," says How To Build And Design A Website author, Jason Smith. "They don't really understand how to put themselves in another person's mindset, which is why so many instruction manuals are so terrible. I wanted to create a web design guide that expresses a lot of complex information without intimidating or overwhelming the reader."
Jason Smith has been designing websites since he was a teenager, but he has never worked as a professional web designer.
"Whenever I get hired by a company I'm never hired as the "web guy" or whatever," says Smith. "But they always end up having me work on updating or even redesigning their web site. And over the years I've found that having an understanding of web design is a huge asset even when it doesn't seem like it would be. There are lots of web designers who are way better at this stuff that I am, but most businesses don't really need the best. They just need somebody who understands the technology and can get the job done."
Currently, How To Build And Design A Website is available as an online guide, but eventually it will be made available in various ebook formats (epub, mobi, pdf) for free.
"Even though most people who would rather hire a web designer or purchase an existing design template, I think it's important to have a basic understanding of how web pages are put together," says Smith. "In fact, I think more people should have a better understand of the technology in their lives...even if they aren't interested in becoming techies."
