According to the 2011 census, there are approximately 77,000 more dwellings in east London and the area has seen momentous transformations – becoming younger, denser, more diverse, less car dependent and more dominated by flats and renting.
With increased desirability in the area, there has been great satisfaction and this is where Guildmore is leading the way. Currently, Guildmore is engaged in exciting developments at Poplar Baths. Work is currently in progress in close partnership with Tower Hamlets Council. Waterproof concrete has been installed to the retaining walls from basement to ground floor. Additionally, at Dame Colet, the sub-floor walls have been completed along with the excavation for pile cap beams at Haileybury Youth Centre.
Progress at Poplar
Striking progress has been made at Poplar Baths Residential with an advanced underground drainage system and steel reinforcement installations. Similarly, construction at Poplar Baths Leisure is well underway with the renovation of the old pools. The interior is changing fast at the Poplar Baths site and groundwork has commenced at Dame Colet.
The external facade structural conditional building survey is also complete along with the retrieval of historical artifacts. Most importantly, English Heritage is documenting photos at each stage, in order to mastermind the reconstruction. Meanwhile, Dame Colet Residential will offer 40 Council rented homes on four levels that are made to lifetime home standards, which aim to provide superb private amenities for the residents.
Historic, yet modern too
Rest assured, Guildmore certify that the £36 million leisure facility development will retain the appealing and historic architectural components of Tower Hamlet’s historic public baths. Simultaneously, Guildmore will construct 100 new homes between the two sites. The youth centre at Haileybury is set to become a welcoming space for the youth of the local community and a much-needed place to call their own.
Haileybury Youth Centre services installations are to commence promptly as it will begin to deliver top-notch facilities to the young people of Tower Hamlets in 2015. This will include a caged rooftop football pitch, showers, changing rooms along with several activities. The plans for the youth centre have been drawn up in consultation with Youth and Community services to make usage of the space that vows to meet the youth’s needs.
Mayor of Tower Hamlets, Lutfur Rahman, said: “The transformation of Poplar Baths will see a magnificent historic building brought into the 21st century, along with better facilities for residents and a hundred new council homes.”
With such exciting projects surging ahead, Guildmore is actively working on expansions and restorations within the community with the view that the East End should be truly defined by originality, creativity and change. Proof indeed that Piers Gough is right to declare that the East End is “Nothing is too good for the East End”.
