The coronavirus outbreak has increased the logistical barriers for medical interpretation. One organization AAA Translation has worked with during the pandemic is Compass, a startup focused on addressing social inequity in healthcare through their free SMS-based triaging platform which was created at St. Louis' Washington University to increase clinical efficiency, diagnosis, and healthcare accessibility in vulnerable areas. The company's primary focus in recent months has been responding to the lack of accessibility to COVID-related information in low-income, and densely immigrant populated urban areas. With the help of AAA Translation, Compass is able to translate COVID-related risk assessment questions in six additional languages to allow for broader access to ESL and non-English speaking populations. In addition to their work with Compass, AAA Translation also provides translation and interpretation services to large hospitals and healthcare systems, translating intake forms and HIPAA compliance documents into other languages with the goal of sharing important information to those who need it most.

"If there are community members who do not understand what's going on or are not able to receive proper treatment in hospitals due to the language barrier, the numbers of COVID-19 cases will increase – it's that simple."
A disproportionate number of minorities are hospitalized, and this is due, in large part, to language barriers around proper safety precautions. Evens and the team at AAA Translation hope to continue their important work so that those facing translation challenges and those greatly affected by the pandemic are able to receive the same quality treatment and have access to information at the same rate as native English speakers.
