SNELLVILLE, Ga., May 7, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The African-American Credit Union Coalition (AACUC), announced that Maurice R. Smith is the 2019 Recipient of the AACUC's Pete Crear Lifetime Achievement Award. Smith is currently the CEO of both Local Government Federal Credit Union (LGFCU) and Civic Federal Credit Union.
Smith, former Board Chairman of the Credit Union National Association (CUNA), has been devoted to the credit union movement for over 35 years. Committed to his beliefs, Smith is an avid fan of credit union ideals. He believes that a business model that empowers its members to engage in democratic, self-help with strong principles that exceed socioeconomic status and class are superior to other business types. His sincere appreciation for local government and community service make him an exceptional leader and well suited for his role at LGFCU and Civic, and in the credit union industry.
As the leader and CEO, Smith has always been a staunch supporter of employees reaching their potential through the development of talents, skills and creativity. He is committed to LGFCU's mission: to improve the lives of our members.
A sampling of Smith's additional credit union related accomplishments include service as a Board Director of AACUC, service on the CUNA Advocacy, Ethics and Corporate Governance Committees, the National Association of Federal Credit Unions Accounting Standards Committee, and the North Carolina Credit Union League of Directors. He was also the Chairman of the Filene Research Institute Administrative and a Board Member of the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation.
Under Smith's leadership, LGFCU's field of membership has provided an array of scholarship opportunities. Those include 120 college scholarships per year for members, professional development scholarships for local government employees, segment field of membership scholarship for law enforcement training, firefighter's training, and EMS training.

Pete Crear Lifetime Acheivement Award History
This prestigious award is presented annually recognizing a credit union professional or volunteer whose career best embodies the African-American Credit Union Coalition's mission to increase the strength of the global credit union community. Sustained excellence is a hallmark of the recipients. The recipient will have demonstrated support for the credit union philosophy of "People Helping People," organized and/or provided significant assistance to credit unions in need, and has constructively impacted the infrastructure, growth, legislative, regulatory, image and/or service delivery capacity of the Credit Union Movement.
In August 2003, Pete Crear received the inaugural African-American Credit Union Lifetime Achievement Award and was further honored by having the award named after him and a college scholarship established in his name. Crear is retired and the past President and Chief Executive Officer of The World Council of Credit Unions, Inc. (WOCCU). Crear is considered a credit union pioneer.
