The Absurd Hero acknowledges the absurdity of life yet celebrates it with purpose and passion.
DENVER, Jan. 28, 2025 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Colorado composer, April Alsup, has announced the dates for Absurd Hero at the 2025 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The new musical brings to life Albert Camus's absurd hero character in a present-day version of the Greek myth of Sisyphus.
The show is the latest musical work from the small theatre troupe from Denver. "This will be our third straight year in Scotland and everyone is excited on both sides of the pond" said April Alsup, "we introduced our concept to Greenside Venues recently and they were thrilled to include our show in their 2025 festival lineup."
For Camus, the Absurd Hero is embodied in the mythological character of Sisyphus, mayor of Corinth, who was sentenced by Zeus to the mundane task of pushing a boulder up a hill only to see it roll back down for eternity. The show serves as a reminder of the resilience humans have, even in the face of overwhelming obstacles. The Absurd Hero acknowledges the absurdity of life yet chooses to celebrate it with purpose and passion.
In 2024 the Edinburgh fringe festival spanned 25 days, sold 2.6 million tickets, featured 51,446 performances of 3,317 different shows in 262 venues. Established in 1947 as an alternative to the Edinburgh International Festival, it is now the world's largest performance arts festival.
Absurd Hero will be directed by Kelly McAllister and staged in Colorado using local talent. The Denver-based team will travel to Scotland and perform with other theatre troupes from around the world. The show will debut at Greenside @ Riddles Court on August 1st and runs through August 9th, 2025.
Some famous faces have graced the halls at Riddles Court; including King James VI, who in 1598 attended a state banquet there and coincidentally, in 1751 it became the residence of David Hume, another well-known philosopher. It should come as no surprise that the building will become the venue for the new Musical's debut. Tickets will be available on the Edinburgh festival fringe website.
