Adjustable Bed Donation Helps Michigan Veteran Find Relief From Acid Reflux Symptoms
Baltimore, MD (PRWEB) August 08, 2013 -- Staff Sergeant Steven Vargas of Fort Gratiot, Michigan is sleeping better at night thanks to a donation of an adjustable bed from Easy Rest Adjustable Sleep Systems. SSG Vargas is the latest wounded warrior to receive a free bed through the Company’s Beds For Our Troops Program.
Two tours of duty in Iraq wrecked havoc on SSG Vargas’s body causing him debilitating pain that interferes with his ability to rest comfortably and achieve a quality night’s sleep. During his time in Iraq SSG Vargas sustained injuries from the concussive force of several IED blasts. Additionally, the physical toll of wearing a 90-pound Kevlar protective vest for 16 hours a day while in Iraq created further long-term issues for his spine. Now stateside, he walks with a cane when he’s out of the house and uses furniture for support when walking inside his home. He’s being fitted for a seashell back brace that will stabilize his lower back and help his balance.
“We’re trying to put off surgery for as long as possible,” stated SSG Vargas. “The recommended surgery will cause me to lose my ability to turn my back side-to-side but the numbness and tingling I experience would go away. The bed has been a big help. Before I got the bed I was only sleeping for an hour or two. Now, I sleep for 5 hours straight. It’s a big improvement,” he added.
SSG Vargas also deals with repeated bouts of acid reflux during the night. “Steven used to wake up choking several times a week from acid reflux,” stated his wife Diana. “Since he received his adjustable bed he’s been able to elevate his head and he hasn’t had any reflux issues. And that’s great for me,” she added. “Because he’s not waking up so much at night I’m also getting a better night’s sleep.”
Now that SSG Vargas is sleeping better he’s looking forward to picking up a hobby or two to occupy his time and assist in his ongoing therapy. SSG Vargas lives at home with his wife and three young children.
