According to the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF), 2.8 million new cancer cases are registered every year globally linked to diet, lifestyles and body weight. The UN World Cancer Research Fund also issued a warning that the world cancer figures have increased by a fifth in less than ten years, which is four times greater than the new HIV cases registered. There were 12.7 million cancer cases around the world in 2008, and out of these 6.6 million cases were observed in men while 6.0 million in women. However, this number is expected to rise up to 21 million by the end of 2030. Relating to the key facts and figures of cancer statistics, Lung cancer has been examined as the most common form of cancer with 1.6 million cases diagnosed in 2008. Following is breast cancer with 1.3 million cases diagnosed. Also, cancer is very commonly observed in colorectum, stomach, prostate, liver, oesophagus, bladder, leukocytes, pancreas, kidney, and thyroid.
Cancer rates are increasing in developed countries due to obesity and lack of physical activities and are equally high among the developing and less developed poor countries due to lack of sufficient infrastructure to control the epidemic. According to the recent 2013 statistics produced by the World health Organization, tobacco use is rated as the most important risk factor for cancer, causing 22% of global cancer deaths and 71% of global lung cancer deaths.
