New Envelope Sealing Technology Recognized In Fast Company Magazine’s Annual Awards Honoring Innovative Solutions That Address Issues Facing Humanity

AeroBarrier represents a potential sea change in the way homes and buildings are constructed.

AeroBarrier®, a breakthrough home and building envelope sealing technology, was singled out for an honorable mention in Fast Company magazine’s annual World Changing Ideas awards. The new technology was selected among thousands of entries vying for recognition as an innovative solution that addresses issues facing humanity. The technology’s unique and highly effective approach to envelope sealing made it a standout in the award’s Spaces, Places and Cities category, and was selected among entries from across the globe, from New Zealand to Shanghai to Switzerland.

Developed at the University of California, Davis’ Western Cooling Efficiency Center, AeroBarrier replaces the labor-intensive multi-stage, multi-product processes used in manual air sealing today with a single-step computer-controlled sealing process that is faster, quicker and more effective. The unique capabilities of AeroBarrier takes out many of the obstacles and guesswork typically associated with creating a tight building envelope – a critical, yet often allusive, component of building energy efficient homes and buildings.

“Using AeroBarrier, builders can dial-in the specific level of tightness they want to achieve,” said Amit Gupta, president of Aeroseal, licensees of AeroBarrier technology. “The computerized sealing system emits a mist of sealant into the building interior that is automatically drawn to all the leaks. A technician monitors the ongoing results and stops the process once the targeted tightness level is reached. The process is so effective at finding and sealing leaks that it is the only method of envelope sealing that guarantees results.”

“AeroBarrier represents a potential sea change in the way homes and buildings are constructed,” said Mark Modera, professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Director of the Western Cooling Efficiency Center at University of California Davis. “With AeroBarrier, envelope sealing – a routine that is typically a long, expensive, labor-intensive process -- can now be completed in a matter of hours.”
