HERNDON, Va., July 22, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- AFG Group, Inc. (AFG) has been awarded the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) contract to provide construction management, relocation management, and move management services for the GSA Headquarters 1800 F Street Collocation Project.
GSA is consolidating an additional 1,000 employees currently housed in GSA's Regional Office Building (ROB), into its Headquarters building on 1800 F Street, NW, Washington, DC. In order to accommodate the additional staff, a series of alterations will occur including the build-out of additional office, conference, and meeting spaces; installation of furniture, fixtures, and equipment (FF&E); selective upgrades to existing electrical and mechanical systems; and renovations to the existing childcare facility and auditorium.
AFG's construction management services will include oversight of the 1800 F Street building structure and systems during construction, while preserving the state of the historical features and maintaining fire and life safety installations. AFG will also be providing move and relocation management services to GSA.
The 1800 F Street building is a 9-story, steel frame building with a total area of 813,649 square feet. Originally built in 1917 to serve as the headquarters for the Department of the Interior, the building has housed GSA since 1949. In 2013, the building underwent a major renovation that transformed it into a High-Performance Green Building, created 50,000 more usable square feet, and consolidated 1,100 employees from other sites into the new open office and hoteling system.
This consolidation project is a model example of GSA's "Reduce the Footprint" initiative which focuses on "maximizing the use of owned Federal space, eliminating costly lease arrangements, and disposing of underutilized assets. GSA is improving the utilization of space through various workplace strategies including: rightsizing individual, collaborative, and support spaces; desk-sharing; a continued emphasis on enabling and supporting mobile work; and shifting from traditional office space to more flexible, equitable, open-plan workplace environments."*
