Alabama Nonprofits to Pursue Fair Elections and Raise Awareness for Fair Districting
Through the dedicated efforts of its member organizations, The Ordinary People Society, Hometown Organizing Project, and Friends of the West End, AEPN is making waves in the struggle for balanced representation that is reflective of and accountable to the communities of Alabama.
MONTGOMERY, Ala., May 26, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The Alabama Election Protection Network (AEPN) is launching various campaigns this summer to dramatically increase available election resources, voting tools, and fair districting awareness in communities across Alabama.
Founded in 2020 by a collective of multi-racial, nonprofit organizations in Alabama, AEPN sets its mission to advocate and inform the public about voting rights, fair elections, and upholding the core values of democracy. As the only grassroots collective with the core focus of election protection and fair representation in Alabama, AEPN works to ensure an honest and accountable government that serves the public interest. AEPN's core mission is to promote voting rights, fair and accountable elected representation for all, and to encourage and assist Alabamians to have a voice in the electoral and governance process.
During the 2020 election cycle, AEPN assisted more than 2.5 million Alabamians with voter registration, access to polling locations, and information on voting. With nearly 62% of registered voters participating in last year's presidential election, Alabama saw record numbers of voters both at the polls and via the absentee voting process.
In 2021, AEPN will launch its fair district initiative, 'Our Districts, Our Alabama', focused on ensuring a fair and accurate process for drawing district boundaries that puts communities first and not the needs of elected officials. The initiative includes training and joint in-state partnerships to educate communities and leaders about the importance of how district lines are drawn and to provide resources to organizations and individuals interested in having their voice heard. AEPN hopes to demystify the redistricting process and make it accessible to everyday Alabamians.
The Ordinary People Society Founder, Pastor Kenneth Glasgow states "It blesses me to see this united, multi-racial front come together after so many years of advocating. I thank God for this team, and the skills and experience of the work that we all bring to the table."
"We are working with a dynamic, dedicated network with a heart for people and a desire to help everyday Alabamians have a voice and the right to vote in a fair and open election process." said Sheila D. Tyson, Convener, Friends of the West End.
