Alcohol Abuse Now A Crisis In UK
Miami, Florida (PRWEB) September 09, 2013 -- As reported by Reuters (9/1) in 'Addicted man of Europe': Study says drug, alcohol addiction a crisis in UK, The United Kingdom now has the highest rates of alcohol abuse in the Europe. A new report by the Centre for Social Justice (the CSJ) found that the UK leads Europe with alcohol abuse costing its tax payers 21 billion pounds, which is 32 billion USD.
Due to the increasing number of patients with alcohol-related issues, hospital admissions in the UK has doubled over the last ten years.
It was found that one in four UK adults drink to dangerous levels. It's no surprise that liver disease is now one of the top killers in the region. Because of the large alcohol consumption, heart disease, strokes and cancer are also leading causes of death .
“We’ve had an unhealthy relationship with it for some time. While the general public is drinking less at the acute end the problem is getting worse, people who work in Accident and Emergency say it’s a revolving door,” Alex Burghart, the director for policy at the CSJ, told RT.
Burghart says the government should combat the crisis by placing a tax on alcohol, which could then be used for treatment.
“The government has backed away from an alcohol pricing strategy; there should be an additional tax for alcohol, which could then be used for treatment for alcoholics,” Burghart said.
