When Josiane Umutoni was working in a center for treatment and research for AIDS, she met a young girl who was HIV+ and just lost her mother. This girl did not have any hope for her future. She gave up on medication and almost on life. Umutoni did not have the chance to talk to this girl whose difficult situation prompted her to write “A Letter to My Daughter” (published by Xlibris) to remind everyone that losing a mother is hard but at the end of the day, one must not let oneself down.

This story revolves around the character of April, a mother who was made aware that there is a chance she might not be able to raise her daughter named Anick. Because of this grim reality, April decided to write a book for Anick. It was crafted in the form of a letter dishing out advices and thoughts about life. Through the book, Anick also learned the history of her motherland.

“Nearly a million people were killed in Rwanda in April of 1994 because of how they were born,” says Umutoni. “I do believe people care as to what really happened and would like to know the details.”

Told from a mother’s perspective, “A Letter to My Daughter” is Umutoni’s first book. It tells a touching story that hopes to encourage readers to live a life filled with compassion for others.
