The story is about a duck who travels through time and space to search for someone who can teach her how to fit in.
SYDNEY, June 23, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- A conversation about ducks mimicking human speech inspired Alexander Gilbey to write, "Dog the Wonderduck" (published by Xlibris AU). This conversation journeyed through the realms of possibility to consider whether an orphan duck could be adopted by another animal and grow up thinking it was that species, and wondered what crises of identity would be faced by that duckling.
This is a story about a duck that thinks it is a dog. However, she is unhappy and does not know how to be normal, like the other ducks. She lives with a scientist who has discovered how to travel to different dimensions. One day, she decides to use the scientist's travelling device to go back through time and see if she can find someone who will teach her how to fit in.
"This story treats time and space as constructs that we can control if we use our imagination. Why can't we travel through different dimensions to search for meaning? It promotes the fact that we all have something special about us and although we may feel different from others, our unique lives, experiences and skills are something valuable, and we don't need to be the 'same' as the majority," Gilbey says. He adds, "It's also written with a degree of rhythm, so it's fun to read."
When asked what he wants readers to take away from the book, Gilbey answered, "There's so much pressure on kids, particularly young girls, these days to get the latest tech, wear the latest clothes, adapt to the themes pushed by digital media. So it is important for them to understand that just because everyone else quacks, they don't have to be mindless ducks as well. However, it also says that it is ok for kids to take the time to explore who they are, in order to be happy with it."
