The Starr Children's Fund Annual Helmets for Heroes Auction is Sept. 7 to Sept. 14
MILWAUKEE, Wis., Sept. 7, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- All 32 starting NFL quarterbacks, along with a few well-known retired NFL quarterbacks, have joined together again this September to raise money for pediatric cancer. Each quarterback donated his own signed helmet to be auctioned off as part of the Starr Children's Fund Helmets for Heroes online auction, which opens on Sept. 7 at 7:00 am CT.
Money raised will benefit the Starr Children's Fund, which supports research efforts that impact the lives of pediatric cancer patients.
After learning that of the billions of dollars spent annually on cancer research and treatment only 4% benefits childhood cancer, legendary quarterback Bart Starr and his wife, Cherry Starr, established the Starr Children's Fund in collaboration with the Vince Lombardi Cancer Foundation (VLCF). To date, the Starrs have helped raise over $16 million to help fight cancer.
"Helmets for Heroes is always a very special fundraiser for me," said Cherry Starr. "I hope that we can raise more money for children this year than ever before."
Before he passed away at the age of 85 in 2019, Bart Starr used to write letters at the beginning of the season to every quarterback in the league wishing them good luck. He called them his 'kick-off notes.' Since then, Cherry has been continuing the tradition and writing letters to all 32 starting NFL quarterbacks herself.
"I wrote a letter to every quarterback in the NFL to continue the kick-off notes that Bart used to write," she said. "I'm proud that all 32 of them are participating for the fourth year in a row."

About Starr Children's Fund
Bart Starr's legacy on the football field matched his charitable legacy. After Coach Vince Lombardi passed away from colon cancer in 1970, Bart and Cherry Starr graciously accepted the role of honorary chairpersons of the first annual Vince Lombardi Memorial Golf Classic and served the foundation for 44 years. They contributed to raising more than $16 million to help fight cancer. In 2017, in collaboration with the Vince Lombardi Cancer Foundation, they introduced the Starr Children's Fund, which is dedicated to raising funds to support pediatric cancer research and treatment.
