Allegheny Health Network, Pittsburgh Riverhounds Announce Plans for New Health & Sports Complex in Coraopolis
CORAOPOLIS, Pa. (PRWEB) July 17, 2019 -- Highmark Health, Allegheny Health Network (AHN) and the Pittsburgh Riverhounds today joined community leaders, elected officials and soccer enthusiasts from around the region to announce plans for what will be one of the largest health and sports complexes in the country when it’s completed.
Located in Coraopolis on State Avenue and adjacent to the Montour Trail, the complex is being developed by the Riverhounds organization and expects to be a destination for athletes of all ages from across the region and country. The AHN Montour Health + Sports Medicine Center will provide those athletes, as well as all residents of Coraopolis and nearby communities with onsite access to a variety of health services.
Scheduled to be completed in two phases, the 78-acre complex will be home to ten turfed, FIFA regulation-sized soccer and multi-purpose fields, including two full size indoor fields for all season use. AHN’s 20,000-square-foot medical facility will house a comprehensive range of clinical programs, including primary care and pediatrics with walk in express care and extended hours seven days a week, diagnostic imaging services, orthopaedic and sports medicine services, physical and occupational therapy, a physician-led concussion diagnosis and management program, and sports performance training.

AHN has been the official medical provider of the Pittsburgh Riverhounds professional soccer club since 2008. The Network plays the same role for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Gannon University, the Community College of Allegheny County and 20 Pittsburgh-area high school athletic programs. It is also one of a few select health care providers in the country designated as an official US Olympic Regional Medical Center.
“Working with the Riverhounds organization over the past decade has been a privilege for our team, and we cannot wait to be part of this unique complex that will bring the resources of AHN and our sports medicine program to the thousands of athletes who live in this community, or who will travel here from across the country for soccer tournaments and other sports events,” said Patrick DeMeo, MD, chair of the AHN Orthopaedic Institute and medical director of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The Montour Center will also be utilized as a practice site for the Pittsburgh Riverhounds and home base for the Riverhounds Development Academy. Established in 2007, the Academy annually trains more than 5,000 athletes ranging from 4-18 years old. The scale of the new complex will increase those numbers significantly to meet a growing demand for Academy enrollment, according to Tuffy Shallenberger, owner of the Riverhounds.
“The popularity of soccer in western Pennsylvania, and in many areas of the country, has never been higher and the waiting list for participation in our academy has far exceeded our capacity over the past several years,” said Shallenberger. “Together with AHN and Highmark, we are building a health and sports complex that will be the envy of the country for both its scale and its connection to a world-class health system with readily accessible onsite services. It will further establish the greater Pittsburgh area as a premier base and destination for soccer and other sports-related training programs and competition.”
The sports performance program at the AHN Montour Health + Sports Medicine Center will be led by Frank Velasquez, a nationally recognized specialist in sports performance training. The program offers advanced, individualized regimens for developing youths, performing athletes and active adults, including strength training for endurance, in-season arm care, summer/winter athletic development and ACL injury prevention.
AHN’s facility will offer patients access to state-of-the-art sports performance and recovery equipment, such as the Alter G Anti-Gravity Treadmill, a Cryo-Sauna designed to promote faster healing of injuries, and a Dynavision Visumotor System designed to enhance reaction times and coordination, among other advanced technologies.
Phase one of the AHN Montour Health and Medicine Center, including AHN’s medical facility and an attached indoor soccer field, is expected to open in the summer of 2020. The structure will be approximately 152,000 square feet in total. Two of the complex’s outdoor soccer fields are already completed and in use. Phase two of the project, including the remaining fields of play, is expected to be completed in 2021.
