Allegheny Health Network President and CEO Cynthia Hundorfean named to Modern Healthcare’s Top 25 Women Leaders List
PITTSBURGH (PRWEB) February 20, 2019 -- Cynthia Hundorfean, President and CEO of Allegheny Health Network (AHN), has been selected by Modern Healthcare magazine as one of the country’s Top 25 Women Leaders. The profiles of each executive recognized this year are featured in the February 18, 2019, print issue of Modern Healthcare and online.
In its eighth year, the biennial recognition program honors top women healthcare executives who are influencing healthcare policy and care delivery models across the country. In doing so, they are also highlighting the continued need to nurture diversity within health care organizations.
“Unfortunately, the gender gap plagues health care just as much as it does other industries,” said Aurora Aguilar, Editor for Modern Healthcare. “Women CEOs comprise an estimated 30 percent — at most— of the overall C-suite. But the executives named to this year’s Top 25 Women Leaders list exemplify how diversity results in success, both clinically and financially.”
Ms. Hundorfean is being honored for the successful organizational transformation she has led at AHN, an eight hospital academic health care system in western Pennsylvania that employs more than 20,000 people, including 1,300 physicians, and which serves as the provider arm of Highmark Health, one of the country’s preeminent integrated health care delivery and financing systems.
When Ms. Hundorfean joined AHN as its President and CEO in February 2016, the network and its predecessor organization had sustained a long period of significant operating losses over the previous decade. Under her leadership, AHN has experienced a remarkable financial turnaround, including two straight years of positive operating and net income.
Ms. Hundorfean is also currently overseeing a $1 Billion capital investment strategy for AHN that includes the construction of five new hospitals, six cancer centers, and the expansion and renovation of many existing facilities. During her tenure, AHN has integrated all of its physician practices and clinical sites of care – more than 250 in total – around a singular electronic health records system. The Network also recently became the first in western PA and among the first in the country to implement a same day appointments program for both primary care and specialty visits.
“Cindy is a transformative leader who has worked in bold strokes to get health care right for the patients and communities served by Allegheny Health Network,” said David Holmberg, Highmark Health President and CEO. “From her commitment to innovation in health care access and delivery, to her dedication to building a culture of clinician-led excellence across our organization, Cindy’s exceptional talents, experience and vision have been fundamental to our success over the past three years. We are thrilled that Modern Healthcare and others in our industry are recognizing what we at Highmark have known for a long time.”
In being honored as one as Modern Healthcare’s Top 25 Women Leaders, Ms. Hundorfean joins prominent leaders from across the entire industry, including health system CEOs, government officials, industry association presidents, research institute leaders, pharmaceutical industry executives, insurance industry leaders, and representatives from retail health care.
“Cindy is the right leader at the right time for AHN, and building on the organization’s young foundation, her results speak for themselves,” said David A. Blandino, MD, Chairman of AHN’s board of directors. “She’s not just one of the nation’s top women health care leaders – she’s one of the nation’s top health care leaders, period. This is a wonderful honor for Cindy, her leadership team, and all of the amazing employees at Allegheny Health Network who have helped to establish the system as an outstanding provider of high-quality, high-value health services in the western Pennsylvania region.”
Ms. Hundorfean and the other Modern Healthcare honorees will be celebrated at an awards gala scheduled for Aug. 1 in Chicago, Illinois.
