CLEVELAND, Dec. 30, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Alternative Press magazine, the leader in alternative culture news, is today announcing the appointment of Julie Anne Quay as CEO. Quay joins an award-winning team that includes Managing Director and former Kerrang! Editor, Sam Coare, and Creative Director, Josh Madden.
Quay was most recently CEO and Founder of global youth pop culture platform, VFILES, a company she created after more than 20 years in fashion and media. She maintains the Executive Director role at VFILES after its pivot into a not-for-profit philanthropic foundation in 2020. Alternative Press is by no means Quay's first foray into leading media properties — she was Executive Editor for V Magazine after earlier stints at VH1, Vogue Japan and Australia, and style.com.
Alternative Press has a storied history as an independent voice of music, fashion, and art. Starting in 1985 as a pasted up punk rock fanzine, today it is one of the largest music magazines in the world. It has long been considered a curator of culture and it has evolved many times over its 30+ year history, staying both relevant and successful in a cutthroat industry. This year marked the launch of a new website and logo, providing an upgraded web and mobile user experience that makes it easier for fans to browse and purchase online.
"Alternative Press is one of the rare breed of media properties that has continued to evolve and thrive since its inception in the 80's. It has the kind of fiercely loyal readership that makes other magazines jealous and still to this day, being on the cover of AP is something coveted by the world's best artists. I'm honored to be a part of the team co-creating the future of such an amazing brand," said Julie Anne Quay, CEO of Alternative Press.
In addition to her role as CEO, Quay also takes on an ownership position, joining majority shareholder, MDDNvest, a company Benji and Joel Madden are partners in. It will be the first time the magazine has had a woman as owner, and in the CEO role.
"Julie Anne is the kind of person you dream of to run an iconic entity like AP. She really gets how culture, music and fashion mesh together and she's also a smooth operator with a track record of building successful and edgy businesses. Partnering her with Sam, who has already made a huge impact, will see the mag continue to build on its incredibly strong brand and stretch it into even more interesting directions. Watch this space."
Some of the artists featured on AP covers through 2021 include critically acclaimed and indie-inspired singer-songwriter, Phoebe Bridgers; indie-pop duo, The Aubreys; metal band of the moment, Architects; country music outlaw, Orville Peck; a multi-cover series on GRAMMY award winning duo, Twenty One Pilots; and a precedent-setting Clay Mates x Spacebudz limited release series of NFT covers.
