Amazing Thailand Offers Something For Everyone

The Kingdom of Thailand has seen a rise in vacationers looking for a combination of classic sightseeing mixed with unique experiences. Despite a strong awards season that resulted in more than ten awards for the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the Land of Smiles is still able to offer that, and more.

"Thailand is renowned for having many faces," says Debika Sen, president and founder of unique tour operators, A Classic Tours Collection. "Everyone knows about the beaches, islands, city and variety of relaxed and vibrant atmospheres. But what most travelers don't experience is the uniqueness and intrigue of real Thai culture: The scents, smells, rituals and lifestyle. There is so much more beyond the hotel restaurant and days spent relaxing poolside."

While exploring the streets of Bangkok, travelers can duck into the many alleyways the city offers, embark on boat trips through narrow canals, explore the plethora of maze-like day – and night – markets and enjoy true royal Thai dishes that are fresh and eloquently presented. There are many opportunities to experience Thai culture, including connecting with the locals, visiting temples to meet with monks, attempting to speak the beautiful and tongue-twisting Thai language, and to literally get lost – because that's where the true adventures lie.

"One of my favorite memories is getting lost in the city," says Ms. Sen. "Although I couldn't speak the language, retracing my footsteps to the hotel proved to be a unique and enjoyable experience. Eventually I came across an elderly gentleman, who, after a few minutes of sign-language and lots of laughs, managed to point me in the right direction. These types of encounters are just a few of the amazing experiences Thailand offers, and my goal is to help other travelers experience the adventure and beauty of Thailand."

Outside of the city, regions like Chiang Rai, Phuket and the many islands off of the Andaman Coast offer experiences that cater to a range of adventure. "Chiang Rai is one of the most alluring destinations the Thai mainland has to offer," says Kittipong Prapattong, director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand. "The rolling hills, sweeping mountains, lush green forests and rich melting pot of cultures make it among the most engaging places to visit."

"Many of the small villages in the region are filled with local Thai experiences that differ from anything visitors could find in the big cities. With cultures inspired by Lanna, Karen and other indigenous ethnic groups, visitors can experience a noticeably friendly, relaxed and authentic Thai atmosphere. For the most 'pure' thai experience, trekking tours to the hill tribes in the region are available."

"Phuket is renowned for beautiful beaches, surfing and island-hopping, but what most don't know about the area is the diversity of the cuisine; Thai, Chinese, Western, Muslim and Indian come together to create a beautiful fusion of flavours. Most travelers associate Thai food with cilantro and peanuts but it's so much more than that," continues Mr. Prapattong. "The charming Sino-Portuguese architecture – a nod to the island's heyday as a major tin producer – can't be forgotten either."

About the Tourism Authority of Thailand

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) was somewhat formed in 1924 by Prince Purachara Jayakara, the Prince of Kamphaengphet when he began writing and sending stories to the USA to advertise Thailand. Since, the authority has grown and developed three main directives: to promote tourism to the Kingdom of Thailand, to accommodate tourists and, to maintain tourist accommodations and attractions.

Subsequently, as the tourism industry was booming and developing exponentially, the scope of the organization grew with it, extending to development and conservation of tourism resources and promotion of travel. A rebranding occurred once again and the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) was finally established on 4 May 1979.
