American Banker will recognize this year's honorees at a celebratory luncheon during its LEAD conference, a one-day program for female bankers that focuses on professional and personal development. In an industry that has established achieving diversity in its top ranks as a priority, this list offers some insight into what the future holds, by showcasing high-potential candidates to own the corner office someday. Among other criteria to be considered for the list, each woman must have played a significant role in at least one major, high-impact project at her company.

Women in Banking: Next applicants must have an endorsement from a senior executive at their financial institutions and demonstrate C-Suite potential to be considered for the list. Additional requirements for consideration are:
- A nomination by one of their mentors or direct managers
- A minimum of one year with their current institution
- A high-level participation in a major initiative for their institution during the previous 18 months
- A demonstration of leadership qualities beyond that particular project
The addition of this program further advances the mission of the Most Powerful Women in Banking program, now entering its 17th year, while also delivering on American Banker's broader mission to cover the agenda for the industry's future. Since 2001, American Banker's Most Powerful Women in Banking and Finance ranking has recognized the professional achievements and influence of top-performing female executives in banking and financial services.
